Letter to Philip La Follette [manuscript], 1950 January 2.

Hemingway, writing on his Finca Vigia letterhead, describes the development of characters and incidents in "Across the river and into the trees." Hemingway writes that "All stories are made up; but you have to invent from knowledge....American criticism is sort of funny. Anything they have not been taught; they think is not true. If you fight they hate you because they don't fight." Hemingway then relates an incident in the Battle of the Bulge involving Col. Jim Luckett of the 12th infantry and a member of General George Patton's staff, and adds "This book was an attempt to distill." Hemingway concludes with a description of his next project "Have the sea part done and now am going to do the air (RAF) and the land."
